Paultin's shadow first animated when the group was at Van Richten's Tower. It crept up behind Dee.[1]
When the group went to Castle Ravenloft, the shadow stole the Strahd doll from the group. Paultin destroyed the shadow with his sunsword and the group retrieved the doll.[2]
Shortly after the waffle crew returned to Faerun, Paultin noticed that was casting a shadow once more.[3]
When the group returned to Barovia, they learned that Paultin's shadow contained a shard of Strahd's essence, and it was the ruler of Barovia. Some referred to it as "the master".[4] Paultin attacked the shadow with the sunsword and rolled a natural 20, completely destroying it.[5]
